Project 365: 134-140

Day 134

Skype date with Beth J. A nice way to end the day.

Day 135

Jack is a curious little guy and he's always looking for a way to escape.

Day 136

Asher looks super cool on his little scooter. He saw the big boys down the street riding their scooters and he came right back home and figured out how to ride his.

Day 137

Asher's first day of Kindergarten 1. He was excited to get back to school and see his friends. His new teacher is nice and he has already declared that he loves her.

Day 138

Roger and I got hungry, so I decided to make a quick 7/11 run for some ice cream.

Day 139

With Asher back in school, Jack has free reign over all of the toys. He loves to go into Asher's room, drink all of Asher's water, hold Asher's blanket and drive Asher's cars.

Day 140

I took off for a weekend girls only trip to Northeastern Thailand. We enjoyed a nice dinner on the banks of the Mekong River, overlooking the mountains in Laos. It was definitely a nice change of pace from Bangkok.

Project 365: 113-119

Day 113

Jack's new haircut has already been discussed, but just to really drive the point home, here he is again. So cute.

Day 114

Roger quasi-adopted our neighbors cat and Asher quickly declared that he loved the cat. And then he named him Puma. The purpose of this half-adoption is to buy a little extra insurance against rodents invading our house while not actually having to worry about what will happen to the cat when we inevitably move again.

Day 115

Jack and I met up with some friends for an indoor (air-conditioned!) play date. Jack was back in the baby carrier for the first time in several weeks and I think he might have missed riding in style. I also think that Jack has finally gained a little bit of weight.

Day 116

We had work meetings all afternoon, so Asher and Jack got to spend a few hours playing with Emma. They had a great time chasing each other around, but Asher did give Emma a very stern talking to when she wouldn't hold his hand to walk across the parking lot.

Day 117

I still find it very funny to see this one just standing up. He will literally just stand in the middle of the room and giggle because he's so happy to be upright. Then he usually falls over.

Day 118

Due to the heat playgroup was moved indoors for the day and Jack finally overcame his fear of the ball pit. It was a big day for him.

Day 119

I went a little crazy at the grocery store and bought some peaches. I don't think either of the boys had heard of them, but they both loved them. I told Asher they were a special fruit that the kids in America liked to eat. He didn't seem to care or know what America was.

Project 365: 106-112

Day 106

Asher wanted to match Jack so they both wore their boat shirts to church. This was our second Sunday to visit an English speaking church. Asher and Jack get to go to their own classes while I get to go to church...for the first time in almost 3 years. Everyone was happy.

Day 107

Asher had a Skype date with Mimi. I think they were reading some books or looking at her dogs, his two favorite Skype things to do.

Day 108

Everyone is happy that Jack has his own bike. Now we can all go for bike rides in the evenings and we can all be happy about it, at least most of the time.

Day 109

Asher boy is out-growing all of his shirts, so we got him a new airplane shirt. With two wings! And big engines! And clouds!

Day 110

At the end of May we are being invaded by Mimi and Uncle Mel. We finally got their tickets bought, now the waiting begins. I'm already looking forward to a summer full of not washing dishes and date nights with Roger. It's nice to have a Mimi that doubles as a housemaid/nanny when she comes to Asia.

Day 111

It's hot, ya'll. And we're sweaty. For the past week or so we have been right at 95 everyday with a heat index near 110. If we have to move away from the fans we start to melt and we haven't been going outside much before dark.

Day 112

We went to the mall to beat the heat (they have air conditioning!) and we stumbled upon some cars for Asher and Roger to admire. Asher wants the Maserati for himself, but he's going to let Jack take a Porsche.

Project 365: 99-105

Day 99

Jack just looked too sweet in his little Easter outfit. Here's some culture: Thai people don't get the whole Easter outfit thing. There's no special clothes on Easter Sunday, no hats, no gifts, no special family gatherings. It shows us how much of our holidays (even religious ones) are defined by our culture.

Day 100

I went away for a few days. It was fantastic. I stayed in a hotel by myself, ate KFC and read a book. I went for some really long walks and hung out by the swimming pool. I even slept until 9 am.

Day 101

The part of the city I was in was filled with foreigners on vacation and they were all taking pictures. I tried to just be a tourist for a few days, but I feel silly taking pictures of the food vendors or the market. After two years it's hard to see Bangkok through the eyes of a tourist. This pictures was my attempt at trying to see something different.

Day 102

Back home with Jack. I had fun away, but I was glad to get back to all of the boys. I washed dishes while Jack put small things inside of something bigger. It's his favorite thing to do.

Day 103

Bath time! Jack was all soaped up and ready to be rinsed off.

Day 104

I have really generous friends. One of my friends is moving back to the States next week and she gave us this basketball goal along with a trunk full of other toys. It was like Christmas in April!

Day 105

We are in the middle of the biggest holiday of the year in Thailand: Songkran. It's the Thai new year and basically it is celebrated with a country-wide water fight. Most people head out of the city and to their villages to celebrate leaving Bangkok very quiet and traffic free. We took advantage and went to visit a friend that lives in a condo with a pool. After swimming Asher spent a long time staring out of the window that overlooked the skytrain tracks.

Project 365: 92-98

Day 92

The trail of Jack across my bedroom floor. You can follow his progress as he made his way to the bathroom.

Day 93

The night before the big game I tried out a new recipe so that we would have some refreshments to accompany UK's victory. They were okay, but the blue icing was a hit with Asher.

Day 94

Somebody had to wake up early to watch the game. We usually just watch the basketball games online, but with UK in the championship we packed up and fought rush hour traffic to watch it on a television with some friends.

Day 95

It's almost Thai New Year and that means it's time for normally well dressed business people to be seen in these fantastic floral shirts. Asher wore his to school and thought he was so cool. Mimi asked him if he lost a bet.

Day 96

Spaghetti night was a big hit. Asher carefully ate his sauce (separate from his noodles) with a spoon and then ate each and everyone of his noodles. Jack stuck his face in the bowl and went wild.

Day 97

Asher went in for his dental check-up and came away with two balloon swords and a new bus. It was a successful visit.

Day 98

We were sitting behind this bus at a stoplight on the way home from the grocery store. It says, "Don't follow me, I'm lost." Lost might not have been the right word, but something was going on because the driver blocked an entire road trying to make a right turn from the far left lane. Also, how nasty is that bus. I don't like to think about all the junk we are breathing in.

Project 365: 85-91

Day 85

March Madness is alive and well in Bangkok. Roger stayed up for the tipoff of the UK game at 1:40 am. I  decided to just sleep in my UK shirt. I will be up at 5:00 am tomorrow morning to watch THE GAME. Even though we both went to UofL we are true blue UK fans.

Day 86

Roger arranged for some babysitting and we enjoyed a wonderful dinner and movie. Considering this was our bi-annual trip to the movies we splurged and went for the recliners in the nice theater. Hunger Games did not disappoint and a night out without the kids is always fun.

Day 87

These roses were the first part of our date from the night before. Roger picked them up on the way home and they are actually still looking pretty good after almost a week. Since there is no AC downstairs at our house the flowers tend to wilt very quickly.

Day 88

I tend to get a night a week to go out with friends for dinner or dessert and this dessert was enough to last me a whole week. We celebrated a birthday with Oreo cheesecake, regular cheesecake and a piece of chocolate fudge cake. There were four of us and only crumbs left at the end of the night.

Day 89

Have I mentioned that it's hot here? Hot season is starting and after a week of temps near 100 degrees I am already looking forward to the rains coming in June. My poor boys look like they just got out of the tub and all they were doing was sitting in front of the fan watching television.

Day 90

I sort of love and sort of hate bath time. I love it at the end when I have two clean boys, but I hate the process of getting them in the tub, washed and dried off. Everyone tends to get a bit dramatic in the evenings.

Day 91

I bought our yearly swimming pool. Seriously, it's our third hot season in Bangkok and our third pool. I'm not sure what happens to them, but every year I need a new one. I guess $5 plastic pools just aren't made for the long haul.

Project 365: 78-84

Day 78

We headed to the Train Park Sunday evening. It's this huge park right in the middle of all the skyscrapers and yes, it even has an old train. Our favorite thing is to rent bikes and ride around for a while before buying some amazing grilled chicken and heading home for dinner. This night we took a pit stop at the playground and let the boys climb around for awhile before we finished our bike ride.

Day 79

We are enjoying Asher's summer break (most of the time). The boys spent a whole morning playing in Asher's room. Jack's favorite part was sitting at Asher's little table. He thinks he is so big when he sits in that little chair.

Day 80

When Jack gets tired of trying to climb on top of the living room air conditioner he crawls on over to the bathroom and starts going at the toilet. He is obsessed with the toilet brush and every time I hear a little splash, splash I know where to find him.

Day 81

Asher got hold of the extra cell phone we keep for visiting friends to use. He was a little upset we didn't have an extra iPhone for him, but he was making do with the old Nokia.

Day 82

We headed up to our neighborhood restaurant to order our rice for lunch. It's rather rustic, with dirt floors and some old plastic stools at wooden tables, but the food is amazing.

Day 83

We had a bit of a traffic jam during playgroup. Asher sat behind Jack saying, "Red light Gack! Stop! Ok, green light. Go Gack. Go! GO! GO! GACK! GREEN LIGHT!" I intervened before Asher's road rage completely took over.

Day 84

Saturday morning we hit up the play place with some friends for a morning of air conditioned fun. Hot season is starting and we are becoming more and more appreciative of climate controlled activities.

17 March 2012

Project 365: 71-77

Day 71

We had a very special plan for the afternoon. First, we got to ride a big bus. Asher got his own seat next to the window and he was so excited. I was a little worried that he might fall out the window. The bus took us to the big park so we could run around and go over a bunch of bridges. Then we took the big pink bus back home.

Day 72

Our new favorite snack is applesauce. I usually don't buy it because it's pretty pricey here, but lately apples have been on sale and we have been making big batches of homemade applesauce. Asher was a big helper, he poured in the sugar and helped me stir.

Day 73

The boys went exploring in the yard. Evidently our water tank was very fascinating and required a bit of attention.

Day 74

Asher has some beautiful eyes and some very long eyelashes. When Roger first saw this picture he didn't realize it was Asher, he thought it was a little girl.

Day 75

We got a babysitter for Jack and took Asher out for a special morning with mommy and daddy. We hit up the play place for some air-conditioned fun before heading over to one of our favorite restaurants for some pizza.

Day 76

We got up and enjoyed some March Madness with our breakfast. Kentucky won and Asher was excited about seeing the cars in the commercials.

Day 77

After seeing the picture earlier in the week of Asher's eyes, I wanted to get one of Jack. He has some big, blue eyes just like his big brother.
